I’ve got to tell you, 2023 has been a bit of a letdown in terms of activity for me. All of the most highly anticipated films have failed to wow me as much as they should. Snake Eyes, Mortal Kombat, Fast 9. Even Nobody, which I enjoyed, had some flaws in my opinion. Action-wise, it seemed like 2023 would be a snoozer.
But then there was this. The last picture from legendary Hong Kong filmmaker Benny Chan, starring Donnie Yen and asian pop culture phenomenon Nicholas Tse in what I’m dubbing the greatest action film of the year. Raging Fire is the title of the film.

Inspector Cheung is a well-liked policeman who has a track record of solving difficult crimes. His history, on the other hand, comes back to haunt him as his former protégé wants vengeance on all those who have mistreated him.
If you’ve been as frustrated as I have by the absence of excellent action this year, Raging Fire is the film for you. Benny Chan’s last, magnificent masterwork of blazing action has been entrusted to us. Some of the finest stunt work I’ve seen in a long time. When the action starts, it grabs your neck and doesn’t let go.
You’ll find a plethora of spectacular battles, shootouts, and chases, all of which are epic in scope. The action was very skillfully done by Yen (who was also the action director), stunt coordinator Kenji Tanigaki, and action choreographer Kang Yu. You’re in for a real treat.

When the discussion is one-sided.
Yen & Tse are also to be commended for their fantastic work not just on the action side, but the acting as well, as they deliver some of their very best work yet. Playing two former friends turned enemies, they go tit for tat that reminds me of great performances such as Pacino & De Niro in Heat, and Travolta & Cage in Face/Off.
But it’s simple for them to be as fantastic as they are because to the superb screenplay, which touches on loyalty, honor, and corruption, all of which are familiar themes from Chan’s past films (Gen-X Cops, New Police Story, Invisible Target).

But, just how supreme is it?
Are there any issues? I thought the picture ended a little too quickly, since there were some unresolved issues that I would have wanted to have addressed, but it is what it is.
I’d be remiss if I didn’t add that the movie is a bit of a letdown. When you watch Benny Chan’s amazing work on display, it truly strikes you where it hurts to know that this maestro will never offer us brilliance like this again.
And the heartfelt homage that plays throughout the end credits did little to lift my spirits. For a long time, Benny Chan was one of my favorite filmmakers, and his passing was a huge loss for the whole filmmaking community.
But he left us with not just an everlasting legacy, but also a great parting present. So, Mr. Chan, thank you. For all you’ve done for the realm of action movies.
