A Discovery of Witches is currently airing on BBC Re-play, but if you’re not in the UK, you’ll have to wait until February 26, 2015 to see the next episode. That said, we’ve already got a pretty good idea of what the episode is going to be after the last one.
After taking a break during Season 1, Mousy M and I are back for Season 2’s final episode, “The Circle” (and its two-hour TV-movie-length premiere). (Spoiler Warning!) In “The Circle,” the entire cast of characters – again, primarily witches – come together for a large, multi-day event, where they test out new spells and try out some new ideas.
A Discovery of Witches is a 2012 novel by Deborah Harkness which is the second book in the All Souls trilogy. In this novel, Diana Bishop, an Oxford historian and witch, is called back to her family home in Yorkshire to help her father, Matthew Clairmont, solve a 200-year-old mystery.. After a short stopover and marriage in Sept Tours, Diana and Matthew were finally on their way to Bohemia. The hunt for the Ashmole 782, Book of Life, is still going on. What they find is much more terrifying.

When Diana (Teresa Palmer) and Matthew (Matthew Goode) arrive in Bohemia, they are met with a cold reception. Emperor Rudolph’s soldiers do not stop Matthew from requesting a meeting with him. Despite having an audience, they are unable to meet Edward Kelly, the alchemist who possesses the Book of Life. Diana intervenes, assisting Matthew in finding a new way to contact Edward. With her desire to learn more about Alchemy, she succeeds in attracting the Emperor’s attention and interest. Getting to Edward will be a more difficult task.
Diana tries her luck by using her wits and a smidgeon of flirtation to get closer to the Emperor. Taking advantage of the Emperor’s curiosity in alchemy and her flirtatious side, she wins some ground. In the meanwhile, Matthew and Pierre scour the grounds and inquire about Bohemia. Matthew has a feeling they’re on the right track based on how no one wants to speak about Edward. Especially after meeting a new guy called Talbot in Bohemia.
A Pleasant Surprise
The appearance of Gallowglass (Steven Cree) with Diana and Matthew is a pleasant surprise. Even better is the fact that Jack (Joshua Pickering) is there to meet them. Diana is relieved, despite Matthew’s rage, particularly after learning that his nightmares have only become worse since they left. We are ecstatic to see each other again, even if it throws a kink in Matthew’s plans. It’s natural that he feels compelled to protect people he cares about.

Matthew follows Matthew’s example, and he runs across Edward late at night, half-crazed and screaming about the Book of Life and witches. Diana had met Rabbi Mahari during her stay with the Emperor, and the two meet with him. He tells her that he has seen the Book of Life, but that he is unable to interpret it. He thinks she is the right person for the position. He also cautions her to be cautious since such magic is not well understood by the general public.
Matthew expresses concern that the Emperor’s infatuation with Diana is becoming excessive. He doesn’t want her to be relegated to the status of an object. When the Emperor displays his resentment toward Matthew, he invites him to a pheasant shoot. Gallowglass, on the other hand, takes advantage of the quest by going in search of the Book of Life. He doesn’t discover the book, but rather a series of terrifying events. Body components of creatures.
This reignites a feud between Diana and Matthew that has been simmering for some time. He confesses that he would murder anybody for her. He feels this way because of his blood fury. When he attempts to flee, a sprinkling of witch-fire stops him, and Diana calms him down, telling him that he isn’t the monster he once was, and that he is stronger than he realizes.

As Diana waits for her meeting with the Emperor, she is approached by a vampire who detects Phillipe’s powerful blood promise. Benjamin Fuchs, a.k.a. Benjamin Fox, is who it is (Jacob Ifan). Those of you who have read the novels know that we were just as shocked as you were. While we don’t want to give too much away, we can say that Diana is fortunate he just walked away. Benjamin is a ruthless vampire with a penchant towards witches. What makes our skin crawl the most is the fact that he is aware that Diana has been marked. The mark can only be detected by vampires from the same clan or bloodline.

The Book Is Speaking To Me
Diana and Matthew are able to get access to the book, but only after Diana exposes a sliver of her power, allowing her to meet Edward and obtain the Book of Life. She snatches the book from Edward’s grip and opens it with her witch-wind. A fascinating alchemical tree emerges from the pages. The Emperor tries to kidnap Diana for himself, just as Matthew predicts, but Gallowglass and Matthew aren’t having it.

We’re still reeling from the huge revelation at the conclusion of the episode. The Book of Life disgusts Matthew right away, and he calls it a book of death. It’s created from the ink of demons, witches, and vampires from the spine to the last page. More so, Edward is imprisoned in his cell, pleading for the book only to be met by Benjamin, who is bloodied after his last meal.

“ A Discovery of Witches” was a decent sequel to the first season and a okay story if you re-watch it. The story had potential but it was pretty obvious what was going to happen.
