Vin Diesel’s “A Man Apart” is a 2011 action-thriller film that features Diesel as a U.S. Army Special Forces officer and top sniper who is framed for the murder of a fellow soldier. After having gone AWOL, Diesel faces extradition to the U.S. and is forced to take a job as a prison guard in order to stay on the run.
It’s true that Vin Diesel is one of the most bankable action stars on the planet, but his “Fast and furious” movies may not be the most entertaining of his career. When “The Fast and the Furious” franchise was at its peak, Vin’s character was quite the anti-hero, a morally ambiguous character who would often do whatever it took to survive. (Just look back to the original film, when he tries to run over the driver of the stolen car just to save his own skin.) And with the current ‘Fast’ franchise, it seems like he’s trying to ease off on the anti-hero stuff and focus on more of his “good guy” role.
Vin Diesel’s career has been on a roll, with the Fast and the Furious franchise spawning a sequel that grossed $1.2 billion. If you’re unfamiliar with the franchise, it’s about Diesel’s character, Dominic Toretto (Diesel), who teams up with a bunch of street racers to pull heists, and then team up with some other street racers to pull heists. In each film, a new character is brought into the fold, and the plot usually revolves around trying to steal a mysterious briefcase or weapon that will give Toretto and his crew an edge in the races. Vin Diesel carved out a big niche for himself in the action movie world with the Fast & Furious franchise. This film series and most of his other productions in the last 20 years featured a rather comical and light-hearted approach to action cinema, including the Riddick films. It looks like that these are the type of roles he prefers to take, but his physique and charisma could also have turned his career towards grittier and more violent action flicks.
Diesel only has one picture in his resume where he gets to play an old-school action hero and put his own twist on the traditional Death Wish vengeance story. Diesel collaborated on this picture with filmmaker F. Gary Gray, who made a name for himself in the 1990s with the outstanding action thrillers Set it Off and The Negotiator. We’ll see whether Diesel and Gray’s partnership for A Man Apart was similarly effective in this piece.

DEA agents Sean Vetter and his squad arrest a drug lord during a raid in Mexico. In revenge, the cartel sends thugs to murder Vetter, but during the assault on his house, Vetter’s wife Stacy is slain instead. He is driven by a desire for vengeance and embarks on a bloody vendetta against every cartel member involved in his wife’s death. His fury leads him to the top of the organization, where the reclusive Diablo has assumed command.
This is one of the most well-known vengeance tales, and A Man Apart offers nothing new in terms of storyline. Despite its simplicity, several of the narrative components are handled sloppily and do not link effectively with one another. The context of cross-border drug trafficking and crime-infested LA areas is also not fully addressed. There isn’t much effort put into fleshing out the characters, and the villains, in particular, are walking clichés.

Vigilante Justice is the ultimate, yet predictable, kind of justice.
Isn’t that lame? It might be, but if your goal is to make a simple action film, this is the sort of setting that can work. There’s no way around it: if you want to spend time fleshing out characters and adding complexities to the narrative, you’ll have to slow down the action. Despite its lack of depth, A Man Apart manages to hold the audience’s attention because to its dynamic directing, deadly action scenes, and passionate performances from everyone on screen, especially Diesel.
Vetter, like many vigilante films, moves from being a nice person and loving spouse to a ruthless killer in an almost immediate change. His acting in the classics is not near as memorable as that of Charles Bronson or Clint Eastwood, but then again, what is? When Vetter is on the loose, though, Diesel gives him a frightening and intense presence that erupts into raw violence in certain sequences and a gruffly charm in others. It’s easy to sympathize with Vetter’s murdering rampage since all of the villains are deliciously sleazy, with Timothy Olyphant giving a standout performance as a flashy hair salon owner and drug dealer who appeared to have strolled straight off of a Miami Vice set.

But, just how supreme is it?
The action scenes, like the rest of the film, are lacking in creativity, but they still have a lot going for them, and following the murder of Vetter’s wife, they come at a breakneck pace. Vetter breaks down doors one by one, sometimes alone, sometimes with his old hood friends, and beats up or murders the perpetrators straight immediately. It’s not much more than that, but due to some fantastic adrenaline-pumping verbal exchanges and a variety of shootouts and fights, some of which are very nasty, this basic approach works extremely well.
A Man Apart might have been a fantastic start for Diesel in establishing himself as a leading man in future gritty action films. However, it bombed at the box office, which may have put a stop to this path for him. The film isn’t flawless, and it doesn’t shine in any one area, but it does offer furious and violent action without any complexities. It’s one of Diesel’s finest flicks to date, a thoroughly enjoyable foray into unbridled old-school action filmmaking.
