Today, I was looking for a soundtrack, and I came across a new CD release for the movie “Paycheck” by Varese Sarabande. The original soundtrack was released in 1995 and it features songs by a wide variety of artists, including Elton John, Sting, Tracy Chapman, Bryan Adams, Lou Reed, and Lou Bega. The release is very hard to find, I’d never seen it before. And the price is right, only $1.49 on Amazon.com.
[Description of remake]John Powell made his entry into the film world with the beautiful, moving and timely soundtrack to John Woo’s iconic film Face/Off (1997). Six years later, Wu and Powell reunited for The Payment (2003), a sci-fi techno-thriller based on the 1953 novel by Philip K. Dick (Blade Runner, Remember Everything). Ben Affleck plays a computer technician who voluntarily has his memory erased to protect his client’s secrets. However, when he goes to collect his salary, he receives an envelope containing trinkets and seemingly random items. He must use these clues to unlock the terrible secrets of his own project. By 2003, John Powell had already produced The Bourne Identity, putting his finger on the pulse of modern action and thriller music. Paycheck combines synth and pop rhythms with orchestral panache and, most importantly, Powell’s impeccable sense of taste. Despite the almost non-stop action and suspense, emotions are emphasized and melodies are used to enhance the atmosphere. I’ve always wanted to do ballet, so I’ve been interested in choreographers and dance for a long time. I used that conversation with John [Wu] to draw on the dramatic history of dance, Powell says. He explains: This album has everything to please. I get a slight panic attack when I see how much music is on this album. It all sounds very good to me and at the same time it’s pure nonsense. I’ve always tried to harmonize better. Many composers I admire have an incredible sense of harmonic flow and flexibility. When I do, it makes me happy. Paycheck was issued by Varèse Sarabande during the shooting of the film. This deluxe edition on 2 CDs has significantly increased the audio length to over 95 minutes and features new annotations by Daniel Schweiger, including a new commentary on the Powell interview.
