Nathaniel Richards (Lord Immortus) – Who’s Who

Nathaniel Richards (Lord Immortus) is a fictional character created by British comic book writer Mark Millar, who first appeared in the comic book series New Avengers #26 in February 2005.

Nathaniel Richards (Lord Immortus), is a fictional character that is a frequent antagonist in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He is a time traveling supervillain who is the archenemy of Doctor Stephen Strange. In the Marvel Cinematic Universe he is played by Tilda Swinton. He first appeared in the film Doctor Strange (2016) in which he goes by the alias of “Lord Doctor”.

As previously mentioned, the big bad Loki was revealed in Anytime. Always. as a fusion between He Who Remains and Someone Else…. it’s easy to guess how Jonathan Majors portrays him. Majors has landed the role of Kang the Conqueror in the upcoming film Ant-Man and the Wasp : Quantummania, and is repeated in Phase 4 (and perhaps beyond): the one who appears in the series is a more benevolent version of Kang, who tries to maintain the timeline through the Time Altering Authority and despises the belligerent measures of his alter ego… making him an adaptation of Lord Immortus, an older and wiser version of Kang himself. It’s a shame, because Sylvie’s appeal means we won’t be seeing the real Immortus in the MCU, but he was still a pleasant surprise. Let’s get to know the original man.

Nathaniel Richards, a descendant of the legendary time traveler Nathaniel Richards who brought peace and harmony to his Earth-6311, was the warlord Kang the Conqueror for many decades, but in his old age he grew tired of fighting and conquering. He left his realm of the Apocalypse, a version of his lost wife Ravonna Rensleer, and retreated to ancient Egypt, where he tried to live a quiet life for a while and returned to his old alias, the Pharaoh Rama-Tut. But the trouble doesn’t stop there for him: He had to intervene again to stop his former Kang from interfering with the Madonna of Heaven, and in the process he also crossed paths with the Avengers….. and of his future self, who claimed to be immortal. As Kang became more dangerous, the Avengers attempted to accelerate Rama-Tooth’s transformation into a more benevolent Immortal, but this resulted in numerous time shifts, so that different versions of Nathaniel Richards (Kang, Rama-Tooth, Immortal, Scarlet Centurion and later Iron Lad) existed independently alongside each other. After the war of destiny, the old version of Nathaniel went to the timeless dimension Limbo in search of immortality, but another anomaly appeared: One version of him saw his future in service to the Timekeepers, angrily rejected this and returned to his Kanga Conqueror persona; another, however, accepted his fate, crossed the barrier and left his alias Rama-Tut to become Lord Immortus. In limbo, Immortus builds a fortress and begins to study time from the outside, trying to fathom its secrets, observe the emergence and development of alternate realities, and understand the fragility of timelines. During his studies, he was approached by the Guardians of Time, beings who are supposed to follow and preserve the timeline, who offered him knowledge and immortality… for a fee.

The Timekeepers kept an eye on the entire timeline, but they needed help, especially with the growing number of time travelers: In exchange for their secrets, Lord Immortus would become their apprentice and assist them in their task of pruning the timelines deemed too dangerous for the existence of the multiverse itself… And repair the damage his former Kang Conqueror continues to inflict on the timeline. Lord Immortus was commissioned to study several millennia from 3000 BC. Chr. to 4000 A.D. Chr. to be observed, mainly the periods he went through under his previous pseudonyms . He obtained the knowledge and technology as promised and enslaved the temporary spirits, trapped and mutated creatures in Limbo itself, which he used when a more direct approach was needed. Living in limbo, Immortus, the first of all his variants, became the only being in the flow of time, the only existing Lord Immortus. While he actively worked on time management to ensure that the Timekeepers would eventually exist, Immortus also worked to ensure that all of his past personalities would turn into himself, so that eventually there would be only him, the one and only Time Lord (to achieve this, for example, he prevented a Rama Tutu from meeting Doctor Doom and becoming a Kang). Although the Timekeepers usually order him to physically destroy certain people or groups to prevent dangerous changes and disruptions, Immortus usually disobeys them, opting for violence only when absolutely necessary, preferring to peacefully manipulate events and people in a more benevolent direction, For example, when he arranged a love affair between the Scarlet Witch, a Nexus creature capable of single-handedly destroying reality, and the Seer, an android, to prevent her from fathering even more dangerous children, or when he solved the riddle of the Celestial Madonna by marrying her. With all the time at his disposal, he could have made better choices than in the past and laid out a more desirable story….. at least for himself.

Nathaniel Richards, a man of many faces and personalities, has gained more knowledge and wisdom in his old age than he could have ever imagined, and he can now use his remarkable talents to protect the entire universe, especially from his other selves. As Lord Immortus, he retains his impossible genius, which allows him to think multidimensionally, allowing him to weave his intricate plans through the ages and even through different realities; He possesses a myriad of futuristic technologies, most of them designed by him, that allow him to travel through time, stop his own aging, prevent him from becoming a ghost even while living in Limbo, increase his strength and durability, fire powerful energy blasts and generate impenetrable energy Lord Immortus, who observes reality from his position, sees everything, knows everything, and moves people around like chess pieces on the chessboard of time to bend history to his will, preserving the entire timeline, as well as his own existence and ultimate victory over all his other, more belligerent and violent doppelgangers.
